Hi Ilima,

Sounds like a pretty cool class. I wouldn't have trouble being a vegetarian. My problem is that at times I would negate the whole healthy thing by craving sweet things and fruit just doesn't cut it for me. Oh well.

ruins lie at my feet
silence runs deep
misbegotten promises
you never meant to keep.
hollow looks of disbelief
whirling thoughts
and falling leaves;
touch me
hate me
show me
you are real
and i'll quietly surrender
to one more night
of cold sheets
and unspent feelings.

Brave child that lives inside
You break all the rules
to earn the freedom
you so rightly deserve

unkind and unkempt
the jealous wait in the wings
to thwart your advance
on life itself.

they gnash their teeth
and grimace at your success
though hands outstretched
to steady you
as if to offer solace,
only waiting for the chance
to push you off the edge.

Like the title, Alice, really emphasizes a child's view of the world. I was born near the tail end of the war, but years and years after, the war dominated conversations and adult consciousness, thus becoming part of the world of us children.

this jangled for me - it took me out of the poem, which was built on believable details, and pushed it a little too hard into the cosmic. otherwise some very nice visuals, and a well plotted structure.

Looking down at the scene from this perspective is interesting--reminds me of the beginning of some movies--I'm thinking summer house ---full of action and detail--like the little boy's toy gun

we had a claw foot tub --in the house I grew up in--in Rosendale--and a well--a summer house that my parents bought for a song--there were all sorts of treasures to find--the first being my own bedroom--then

While I will agree that it's a bit long (relative to many pieces posted here), I still like it. It has a feeling of so much raw emotion, not surprising given the content. I really enjoyed the way the story gets told, as though in chapters. Each time you "hear" something, it's a different part of a tale. I actually like the original version, but the edited ones read a little easier.

I know what you're saying here, Helen. The main thing is she's walking! My mom had a fall recently, now has to have a walker with wheels; she was reluctant at first, but has worn out the tennis balls and is getting around much, much better and is safer.

Jazz, having grown up in Provincetown, I could "see" this poem vividly. Provincetown doesn't have a regular boardwalk but it has a town wharf and strange characters. I loved your descriptions. I'll be looking for your poetry.

Thankyou for your validating words. I usually write about an actual experience, in this case -- years ago I worked the early shift at a nursing home on Thanksgiving. I had plans with my sister and her husband later that evening and spent most of the time sleeping in their bed. I was shameless, and indeed, coffee didn't help. Brenda, I'd be honored to have a poem be nominated.

Look at our Alice, and her great comments on your poem. It's wonderful, the way she takes it all apart and reads into it, her own thoughts. She makes so much good sense and I can only thank you for the write, and Alice for the decifering. I have enjoyed the entire series, hope you will do another and see that this is published.

stick
to writing
where ignoring instructions
leads to development

of a poetic voice

and which is just as good
