XXXVI--11 Father's Day

Postby WayneS » Mon Jun 19, 2017 11:14 am

Father's Day

My son and his family,
midst a camping trip
from Georgia to Maine,
called to wish me a
happy Father's Day,
each grandchild,
one at a time,
dutifully offered their greeting.

I remember those forced calls
to relatives,
especially my grandparents,
who didn't speak enough English
for the conversation to go beyond
them saying something
in Yiddish and me parroting
a foreign sound
my mother had taught me
for the occasion.

I hope my grandkids' good wishes
were less strained.

[i]I hope my grandkids' good wishes

i hope the same when i share holiday greetings with my mother and a father in law - neither of us speak enough of the other's language to go beyond happy/merry whatever

however the good side of the inability for more extensive communication is that we haven't had an argument in 40 years, or, at least, not one I recognized as such. who knows

allen new poems and new poets every week

This helps, Wayne, this recognition of similarity in strained conversations -- So many reasons behind them, one big one being the generation gap and enough distance in the relationship to not have a pocket filled with topics for desired chatter.

Oh well, they may have had fun with it anyway.
