An Unpleasant Start to a Day


a wet fog
hangs over the morning
smelling like a towel
left in my gym bag overnight

even when I unroll it
shake it out
and leave it outside to dry
it retains its mustiness

noon day sun could dry it out
but the odor
a mildewy memory
will linger

it will need a good washing
a heavy dousing
followed by gentle warmth
for the towel to regain its fluff

and for birds to come out of hiding
to cheer a new day.

Until then, the mist will remain
with silent birds out of sight.

I recognize this day, Wayne, and your use of the gym towel enhanced my sensory connection by a lot -- We have days like that here though I've not thought to use this analogy. I like it.

My day began foggy but not this thick, not in my neighborhood, anyway, but it was there before the blue sky did its best to take over.

I think we got warmer than you....

don't have much experience with gym towels, but love these overcast, dewy mornings.

so maybe i ought to go to a gym and sweat up a good bym towel.

not gonna happen.
