LXXXII-2 Undeserved Shame

Postby hawkseye » Thu Nov 30, 2017 11:27 pm

Undeserved Shame

Not “me too”
no riding the waves
of celebrity abuse,
but I paddle the river
of more ordinary
emotional, physical,
sexual abuses,
harassment a mere
side serving,
added calories
in energy exerted
rowing along,
remaining afloat
no matter
no matter
no matter
because silence
keeps the boat afloat,
rocking the boat
akin to being violated
all over again.

But we row, all of us
swept along
with the current,
or caught in eddies
again
again
again
raising a sail,
more like a giant
filter, blocking
the light
hiding
undeserved shame,
so no one sees,
no one judges
no one blames
us
because that’s what happens
or did
and still does,
but maybe one day
maybe one day
our voices will rise, too
our sails unfurled
finally setting us free.

interesting time.

but i fear the pendulum. Garrison Keeler for example. one charge, concerning an action that might have been inadvertent, without any further investigation. he's immediately deprived of his work.

i think of my own experience. not as nimble at getting up from a chair easily and quickly as i used to be, this has happened several times. i'm sitting, a female friend comes into a room. san antonio being a place where hugs are expected, the women comes for hug, catches me just half way out of my chair, i'm stuck with my face in her beasts and my hand on her butt.

making me happy these days that i'm neither rich nor famous.

A strong poem.
As a guy, I see things differently from some women. The whole "Men from Mars, Women from Venus" thing.

Still, most of these things are so outrageous that I have never heard of them. Yet I believe them, as long as there is more than one accuser (lacking text messages or other evidence).

Polls show 1% of the American people firmly believe that they, themselves, have ridden on an alien spacecraft. Not just believe in aliens, or saw a light which "might have been a UFO".

All the time we have criminals arrested for some heinous act and they have full belief that they were killing a demon or savings the world from evil.

Then I see these stories of adult bullies or sexual predators or such and I have to wonder what reality they are in?

A powerful statement, one which men need to hear. "Harassment" takes all forms, some inadvertent, some meant as a joke, some meant to display power and some meant as flitation, innocent and not. But all have the effect on women who don't say anything--undeserved shame.

The "Me-too" movement--my predictiion as Time "Person" of the Year, which will drive Trump insane--sometimes overdoes it, to be sure, but it's offered women the courage to speak up, to let loose the shame of silence. It's forcing men to reevaluate, but more. It's offering women power.

But we row, all of us
swept along
with the current,
or caught in eddies
again
again
again
raising a sail,
more like a giant
filter, blocking
the light
hiding
undeserved shame,
so no one sees,
no one judges
no one blames

Thanks for writing this, Judy.

Wayne
