LXXXII-8 Christmas Present Cache

Christmas Present Cache
OR Where To Hide Presents?

It’s that time of year
again, when boxes arrive,
their contents hush-hush
each whisked away
to hopefully-hidden
corners of closets.

My grandkids’ first year
of obvious searches
for Christmas presents
sends their parents into new levels
of creativity, the challenge:
outsmarting youthful curiosity.

All the easy, hidden in plain sight
locations no longer protect
unwrapped gifts from prying eyes,
this year plain brown boxes
line high closet shelves
purposely cleared
for their new role.

Naturally, each child received
a well-worn conversation,
similar to one I heard
as a child, not that one
about coal in your stocking,
but about loss of the joy of surprise
for themselves and their sibling.

For now, this remains sufficient,
though as I recall, one or two
more years of creative sleuthing
remain before the desire for surprise
roots itself back into the psyche
allowing the return of hiding
presents in nearly plain sight.

i remember the days of secrets and surprises, miss them.

we had a trick we played on my son when he was very young. my wife would take him to see lights and just as they got back, heading for he door, i had some jingle-type bells i'd ring. aw, you just missed him, we'd tell the boy. maybe next year.

Hiding presents is a problem for me. On several occasions I have forgotten where I hid them. Finding them (my surprise) in April or May.

When our kids were young, they were terrible in trying to shake or otherwise determine from the wrapped gift what they were getting. One year we picked two colors of stickers (one for each girl, as our son wasn't born yet). It took them about five minutes to guess one gift by the shape or size, then use the color on that gift to deduce which color was for which girl. The next year we used six different colors.

All this sleuthing and surprising sounds like fun.
