XL--28 The Shadows of Night

Postby WayneS » Sun Dec 03, 2017 6:18 pm

The Shadows of Night

Night slips through
once sunny windows
leaving cold shadows
in its wake.

My father didn't want
his hospital bed
moved to the bright living room
where friends and family gathered.

He preferred the heavily curtained bedroom
to rest alone
in quiet preparation
for the eternal night.

Day and night
light and dark
made no difference to him
in those final days.

I think of him
as night slips in
leaving cold shadows
in its wake.

Quoting it all, Wayne -- don't want to pull it apart --- got even better on the second and third reads
awesome the way you brought the beginning stanza back to the end -- this is a container where the outside (opening and ending stanzas) is life alive holding precious content. I'm also nodding at the quieter and more somber tone of S1 and S5 while the 3 in the middle have a different voice, not loud but maybe acceptance and recognition of wisdom, vision

Each read, something else rises in my mind

This is worthy of a bigger audience!

A lot of truth to that poem. People wanted some quiet and peace to prepare. Not all, but many do wish that for the end.
